After a courageous victory in Game I as underdogs, New South Wales head into the second game at ANZ Stadium perfectly positioned to finally end Queensland’s eight year Origin dominance.

Whilst their attack was good and asked plenty of questions of the Queensland defence, it was NSW gritty determination in defending their own line which ultimately won them the game. At one stage in the second half, NSW were defending for ten of fourteen sets and produced five try-saves for the match.

Both teams have made changes for Origin II, most of which have been forced. The Blues have lost the Morris boys from their right edge meaning Josh Dugan has been called in out of position to play in the centres with Will Hopoate named on the wing. Greg Bird is the only other change, coming in for reserve Tony Williams. This sees Bird start, skipper Paul Gallen push forward and James Tamou drop to the bench.

Queensland have defied precedence and named a 22-man squad – and then added Dave Taylor – to cover for their long list of injury worries. Definitely out are Cooper Cronk, Corey Parker and Josh Papalii are definitely out. Billy Slater, Greg Inglis and Daly Cherry-Evans are in doubt but all are expected to play. Taylor seems to have his nose in front for the final bench spot though Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt are both in the mix. Jacob Lillyman is a certain inclusion on the bench.

Using the Dally M Medal as a measure of form, the Blues have seven players in the Top 25 of the count including runaway leader Jarryd Hayne, Josh Reynolds (3rd), Robbie Farah (7th), Aaron Woods (11th), Trent Hodkinson (11th), Trent Merrin (11th) and Greg Bird (11th). The Maroons have eight of their squad in the top 25 though only six are expected to play. They are: Johnathan Thurston (2nd), Daly Cherry-Evans (5th), Ben Hunt (5th), Matt Gillett (8th), Greg Inglis (11th), Anthony Milford (11th), Matt Scott (20th) and Cameron Smith (20th).
